In Harmony With Horses

Saying "Goodbye" to Sally Swift
April 20, 1913 to April 2, 2009

On Friday, March 27th I was riding in a car on the way to Rutgers University to present at their Horses 2009 event. I was deep in thought as I looked out the window on this clear and sunny day. My mind went back to Sally who had been trying to recover from pneumonia for several weeks. The bright blue sky was accompanied by lots of wispy, white clouds. I realized that it was a perfect reflection of this remarkable women, with her bright blue eyes and beautiful white hair. As I sat with Sally the day she passed, I shared how the sky that day made me instantly think of her. I told her that whenever I looked up at a sky blue and white, I would feel her presence. I also spoke about the wondrous legacy that she was leaving behind. Sally was the perfect picture of strength, courage, kindness and humility throughout all of the time I knew her. The world is a much better place for having known Sally and she will be sorely missed. However, she lives on in each of us “her children“ as we share her work with humans and horses. May we all find success in staying “centered” and “grounded” in all that we do.

With love and gratitude to you Sally,

  Heidi

Words of Wisdom from Sally

Winter 2008

"These are some of the most important things I have learned in my 95 years. Remembering these valuable lessons will help all of us in our roles as friends, mothers (and fathers), sisters (and brothers) and as representatives of Centered Riding.

If I want my dreams to come true, I must not oversleep

Of all the things one wears, an expression is the most important

The best vitamin for making friends.....B-1

The quality of our lives depends on the quality of our thoughts

The heaviest thing we carry is a grudge

I try and keep my words soft and sweet in case I have to eat them

One thing I can give and still keep is my word

Ideas won't work unless I do

My mind is like a parachute, it works best when open

It is never too late to be the best that we can be.

Love Always,
Sally"

Summer 2007

"At the age of 94 every new day is a gift. I would like to take this opportunity to impart that thought to each and every one of you regardless of your age. So far it's fun being old and retired, but I am well aware that my current situation could change in the blink of an eye, and it could be otherwise............

OTHERWISE
by Jane Kenyon

I got out of bed
On two strong legs.
It might have been otherwise.
I ate Cereal, sweet milk and ripe flawless fruit
It might have been otherwise.
I took the dog uphill to the birch Woods.
All morning I did the work I love.
At noon I lay down for a nap.
It might have been otherwise.
I ate dinner together with friends at a table with silver candlesticks.
It might have been otherwise.
I slept in a bed in a room with paintings on the walls, and planned another day.
But one day I know, it will be otherwise

My love to each of you. Please try and plan on being at this year's Symposium. I really look forward to seeing each of you then.

Sally"
